Purpose
To rapidly develop an integrated business plan that clearly describes the collective vision, illustrates the strategic roadmap, lays out the project portfolio, master schedule and resource commitments required and explains the overall justification for the business model. It provides a concise overall master plan as a framework for securing resources, governing detailed project planning and executing the strategy.
Outcomes
The ultimate outcome is a business plan document that includes:
- A discussion of the organization’s positioning within its business environment,
- A clear statement of management's collective vision and intentions,
- Action plans, revenue & cost forecasts, resource requirements, risk mitigations, schedules and funding strategies all linked to that vision.
The strategic ambition is summarized as a three-part vision statement (What, Why, Goals) and as a single page strategy map and text narrative that illustrates key thrusts, strategic objectives and the relationships between them. The action plan is laid out by defining its scope as a series of projects, addressing key risks and resource availabilities, and presenting the overall timeline as a program master schedule.
Format
The plan is explored using interviews, workshops and working sessions to develop and refine each element in a collaborative, insight gathering manner. The business planning discussions include
- A familiarization and information gathering interview with the CEO or equivalent leader.
- A discussion of the organization’s position in its business environment.
- A series of interviews and workshops to develop a clear vision and broadly supported strategy.
- The development of an intended business model.
- Further working sessions to collect, prioritize and design a program of planned projects and sequence them to drive the strategy forward.
- Once the overall program design is settled, charters are prepared for each project; setting the scene for detailed planning and combining to reveal resource requirements.
- The finalization of action plans, resource allocations, risk mitigations, schedules and funding strategies all linked to the overall vision.
- The overall plan can then be documented, validated and approved.
